Chapter 25 Wind
Shen Wanchao and Lu Niannian had just finished checking all the supplies and hadn’t even had time to report to Teacher Yang when Zhou Mingchen grabbed him and pulled him away.
“What are you doing? Where are we going?”
Shen Wanchao quickly handed the list back to Lu Niannian before catching up with Zhou Mingchen.
Zhou Mingchen didn’t answer him, but instead shouted at Fang Chi, who was preparing for the 10 o’clock long jump competition, “Chi’er, want to go watch Huo Tingsong’s high jump?”
Fang Chi paused in his warm-up and pointed at himself, “Me? Why would I go watch him…”
Before he could finish speaking, Zhou Mingchen had already taken two steps forward, grabbed him, and dragged him away without saying a word.
Shen Wanchao, who was also being dragged away, saw Fang Chi and smiled at the fellow sufferer:
“Hi, Tony.”
Fang Chi: “…”
The high jump wasn’t as popular as the sprint, but this time the area around the field was crowded with students, jostling and playing around. The atmosphere was lively.
As Shen Wanchao got closer, he overheard a few Omegas discussing the event and learned why it was so popular:
“Is Huo Tingsong from Class 13 really participating?”
“Of course! He came in first place in his first year of high school.”
“Yeah, yeah, I saw him last year, wow, his waist… drool.”
“Are you really here to watch the competition?”
It seems Huo is quite popular among the Omegas. Shen Wanchao couldn’t help but chuckle; he felt a touch of youthful joy.
As they spoke, the competition began. After checking in, the participants lined up, waiting to enter.
Surprisingly… Shen Wanchao spotted Lin Anyi in the Omega group’s queue.
The young Omega was as silent as ever, his face devoid of any smile. He adjusted his white wristband while carefully maintaining a distance from the other competitors.
Shen Wanchao had initially thought that Lin Anyi’s solitary nature wouldn’t allow him to participate in team events like the sports meet, but now it seemed he wasn’t as withdrawn as he’d imagined.
Even if he was forced to participate, after the sports meet, he would unconsciously develop a sense of belonging to his class, and his classmates would become slightly more familiar with him because of his participation.
These changes were invisible and intangible, but…once they happened, nothing could be done.
Shen Wanchao really hoped Lin Anyi could integrate into his surroundings.
He wanted to call Lin Anyi’s name to encourage him, but Zhou Mingchen was right next to him, making it awkward for him to greet Lin Anyi.
The previous family dinner had been unpleasant, and Shen Wanchao didn’t understand why Zhou Mingchen disliked Lin Anyi so much. Even though they were just classmates, he didn’t want to cause any more trouble.
However, even without him greeting him, Lin Anyi seemed to sense his gaze. Their eyes met as soon as Lin Anyi looked up.
He took advantage of standing in front of Zhou Mingchen, who couldn’t see his expression, to smile at Lin Anyi. He mouthed, “Good luck!” Lin Anyi saw his movement and also saw Zhou Mingchen behind him.
Lin Anyi quickly turned his head away.
Shen Wanchao heard Zhou Mingchen’s cold snort behind his head.
Haa.
The road ahead was long and arduous.
Huo Tingsong, as a seeded player, was the last to appear in the Alpha group. His appearance immediately aroused cheers and commotion around the seats.
Shen Wanchao’s gaze, however, was focused on the Omega group on the other side. Lin Anyi was about to start as well.
Huo Tingsong did two sets of warm-up exercises at the side of the arena. He wore a tracksuit, a vest and shorts, and when he squatted down, one of his long, straight legs almost swept over innocent onlookers.
Others might not notice, but Zhou Mingchen knew that Huo Tingsong was showing off.
He even had a straight face while warming up, pretending to be very serious and handsome.
The Omegas actually fell for his act.
However, Zhou Mingchen looked down and realized that Shen Wanchao’s gaze wasn’t even on Huo Tingsong.
Huo Tingsong’s energetic performance was completely wasted.
Because Huo Tingsong’s elaborate display delayed him for a while, one person from the Omega group had already finished jumping, and it was Lin Anyi’s turn.
Shen Wanchao’s attention was completely drawn to Lin Anyi. He thought it was too far to see clearly and said to Zhou Mingchen, “I’ll go take a look over there.”
Zhou Mingchen tried to grab him, but he was too slow and could only watch helplessly as Shen Wanchao ran to the Omega group’s high jump area.
Zhou Mingchen sighed.
Brother, it’s not that I don’t want to help you, it’s just that you’re not up to the task…
Lin Anyi chose a height of 1.70 meters for his first jump, which was almost his own height.
Even on the field, Lin Anyi didn’t show any more energy. He stretched his legs perfunctorily a couple of times and then stood behind the starting line.
When wrapped in his clothes, Lin Anyi’s figure looked about the same as Shen Wanchao’s. Thin and frail, but in reality, unlike the lean physique of Shen Wanchao, who maintained a healthy diet and exercise routine year-round, he was almost malnourished, so thin that one worried a gust of wind might blow him away when he jumped.
After his run-up, he leaped like a fledgling swallow, and easily cleared the 1.7-meter-high bar.
Lin Anyi’s expression was relaxed and carefree even as he smoothly landed. After getting up, he readjusted his wristband.
Shen Wanchao’s eyes widened in surprise.
This result was basically championship-level in the Omega group.
The audience for the Omega group wasn’t as big as that for the Alpha group, but witnessing Lin Anyi’s outstanding performance, they all spontaneously erupted in cheers of amazement.
The judges asked Lin Anyi if he wanted to try the 1.75-meter height, but Lin Anyi, uninterested, declined.
The competition ended.
There weren’t many participants in the high jump event; the preliminary round was the final. After the judges checked the results, the rankings were announced.
Huo Tingsong was first in the Alpha group.
Lin Anyi was first in the Omega group.
The rankings were quickly relayed to the podium and read out by a girl from the broadcasting station.
The students in Class 4 were completely taken aback when Lin Anyi, who had only agreed to participate after being pestered to the point of exhaustion by the sports committee member, unexpectedly won first place for their class. A dozen or so students who weren’t competing immediately came to their hero, bringing him water and chocolate.
Suddenly surrounded by a group of people, Lin Anyi immediately felt uncomfortable.
He was bombarded with questions like, “Are you hurt?” and “Want some water?” “Lin Anyi, you’re amazing!” and “The teacher said there’s a reward for you!” The enthusiastic greetings overwhelmed him.
Lin Anyi couldn’t handle it. He looked up and unexpectedly saw Shen Wanchao standing not far away.
Shen Wanchao mouthed, “Great job!”
Meanwhile, Huo Tingsong wanted to tear Zhou Mingchen apart.
“Didn’t you promise to help me pursue him?! Is this how you help me?” Huo Tingsong was furious. “The person’s already gone, he hadn’t even seen my heroic performance, so what’s the point of me winning first place!”
Zhou Mingchen patted his shoulder seriously and said earnestly, “That’s not right, Old Huo. Participating in the sports meet is to bring glory to the class. You won first place, adding to the glory of Class 13, and I, as your friend, feel honored. How can it be meaningless?”
“Get lost! I don’t trust you anymore, you unreliable brat!”
After the high jump competition ended, around 11 o’clock, Qiongya School finally welcomed the most anticipated event of the morning, the 100-meter sprint.
Of the three athletic students in Class 1, two practiced volleyball, and the remaining one, Fang Chi, was a long-distance runner; he lacked explosive power.
Yang Liu had already heard about the amateur sprint race between Shen Chao and Zhou Mingchen, and specially designated them to participate in the 100-meter race in the Alpha and Omega groups.
The Omega race went first. Shen Wanchao went to the restroom to change into his sprint uniform, put on his number 1 marker, and stood on the first lane.
The 100-meter race occupied a quarter of the lane, and the student council members had laid out a rope along the side of the track to prevent unauthorized personnel from crossing and interfering with the race. As the morning’s races neared their end, almost everyone from Class 1 came to the track to watch Shen Wanchao’s race.
“Shen Chao! Go! Shen Chao! The strongest!”
Fang Chi’s voice cracked: “Chao’er, you’re like the wind!!”
Shen Wanchao felt a little embarrassed.
This was a bit too youthful and exuberant…
At this moment, he felt as if not only his body, but also his mindset had returned to 18 years old.
Shen Wanchao folded his body in half, his hands touching the ground, then stood up, and stretched his entire body.
Although his appearance and physical functions had returned to those of an 18-year-old, miraculously, the muscles he had accumulated through years of consistent exercise hadn’t regressed to the level of twenty years ago. Similarly, the athletic skills preserved in his muscle memory hadn’t disappeared.
So, strictly speaking, his participation in the high school sport meet was a case of an adult bullying children.
But who could blame him when the teachers and classmates of Class 1 had such high hopes for him?
Therefore, Shen Wanchao had no intention of holding back.
“On your marks, get set–”
Shen Wanchao and the other six athletes crouched down.
“Bang–!”
The starting gun fired, and Shen Wanchao took off like an arrow.
The outcome of the 100-meter sprint was decided in just over ten seconds, and Shen Wanchao went all out, gaining an absolute lead almost from the very first step.
The wind blew across his cheeks, and he ran unrestrainedly, until even the wind seemed unable to resist, changing direction and giving him a run.
Although it also gave the other athletes a run.
“Aaaaaah!!!”
“Number 1 is leading by so much!!?”
”That’s too fast!!”
The outcome was predetermined. Just as everyone was anticipating Shen Wanchao’s first cross of the finish line, a student, seemingly oblivious to the race and carrying a textbook, suddenly crawled through the ropes set up by the student council and onto the track.
Although the student didn’t actually enter the 100-meter lane, he passed too close to the finish line. The runners were sprinting at full speed and couldn’t possibly stop immediately after crossing the finish line unless they slowed down beforehand; otherwise, they would definitely collide head-on with that person.
Someone from the student council noticed this sudden situation and tried to warn him, but everything happened in the blink of an eye.
Shen Wanchao had already crossed the finish line and was about to collide with that person.
If the collision were to happen, he would definitely be bruised and battered.
Shen Wanchao had noticed this unexpected intruder before crossing the finish line. He didn’t care about his race results anymore and slowed down, but it was still too late.
Suddenly, an arm reached out from the crowd, and grabbed the intruder’s arm without hesitation before pulling him off the track.
Startled by this sudden turn of events, and losing his balance due to the sudden deceleration, Shen Wanchao stumbled and was about to fall.
He reflexively closed his eyes, ready to accept his fateful embrace with the track.
However, upon falling, he found himself in a warm, almost scorching, embrace.
His waist was held tightly, the person beneath him used their body as a cushion to prevent him from touching the track.
Shen Wanchao opened his eyes and saw Zhou Hui, who looked on with interest.
“Xiao Chao, be careful when you exercise!”
