“It turns out there’s also a house around here that you told me to deliver flowers to. I’m planning to go there today.”
Jion dusted off his pants and grinned. Baek Kitae responded with a bright smile.
“Can I come with you?”
“Uh… yes….”
Having someone accompany him wasn’t a difficult. With Baek Kitae by his side, he wouldn’t get lost.
After smiling at him one more time, Jion walked toward the entrance. He felt relieved when the handle turned, but only for a moment. The door didn’t open enough to let him slip through.
“Ah….”
He strained to look through the slightly opened gap, and it looked like it had been blocked from the inside. Probably to keep students from coming up to the rooftop.
I can’t call 119 to be rescued, and I certainly can’t jump from here…As Jion sighed in his predicament, Baek Kitae smiled and approached him.
“I’ll get you down.”
“Huh?”
Before he could even comprehend those words, his body started floating. Then, he flew through the air with Baek Kitae and landed safely on the sports field. It happened in the blink of an eye. It felt as if he had used superpowers.
“Jion, are you hurt anywhere?”
“Uh, uh… No, I’m fine. But hyung, how did you do it?”
Startled, Jion couldn’t help but ask. It was the first time a ghost had interacted with him in this way. He wondered if Baek Kitae had manifested a will for some reason, just like Park Seolhwa’s mother, Jo Yunkyung, who used to stir up waves to push humans away.
“It just happens when you think you want to do something. I find it a bit fascinating myself.”
Kwon Chasa had said something like that. He said that Jo Yunkyung’s will had manifested in a good direction. He added that when a ghost becomes a vengeful spirit or in a state close to one, the manifested will can harm humans.
Had Baek Kitae manifested on the good side? Although he often sensed an eerie aura from him, no matter how he looked at it, there was no sign of him becoming a vengeful spirit. Jion smiled at him as he shrugged his shoulders.
“Shall we go, Hyung?”
Well, it was better this way. If it weren’t for Baek Kitae, he would have been stuck on the rooftop. Jion thought nothing of it and walked on. Fortunately, he was able to leave the school without being seen by anyone.
It was only after leaving the main gate that Jion let out a sigh of relief and took out his phone. He searched for Jeongdam Apartments on the map app and found it was about a 15-minute walk away. He could have taken the bus, but the travel time was about the same. Since he had to stop by the flower shop, he thought it would be better to walk.
“Hmm… I think I should stop by the flower shop first. The house isn’t that far from here, so…”
He muttered to himself while searching for a nearby flower shop on his phone. Suddenly, he felt a wind ruffling his hair and turned to the side to see Baek Kitae looking around. Jion also looked around, but there wasn’t even a passerby, let alone a ghost.
“Jion, sorry. I have to go.”
“…What? Suddenly?”
“See you next time.”
As if he were being chased by something, Baek Kitae vanished from sight in an instant. Almost simultaneously, something fell from the sky and landed right in front of Jion. Without even having to look up to check, Jion’s heart reacted the moment he saw the shoes. The black shoes, always gleaming with a polished shine, were the ones Kwon Chasa always wore.
He looked up belatedly, but his eyes did not meet those of Kwon Chasa. The latter was looking around with a frown. His face was so serious that Jion felt self-conscious even about greeting him.
Just as Jion cautiously glanced around, Yu Chasa, who had left him behind and disappeared beyond the hongsalmun, appeared.
“Oh, I realized I didn’t take Jion home! I was so startled that I stopped halfway over Mont Sacheon… ah!”
Yu Chasa was startled upon seeing Kwon Chasa.
“Uh… Kwo-Kwon Chasa-nim, when did you arrive? Is the work… all… finished…?”
Seeing the fidgeting Yu Chasa, Jion finally realized his mistake. Since Kwon Chasa had also mentioned meeting Nam Seunghee, this place wouldn’t be unfamiliar to him. Moreover, Yu Chasa made a fuss the moment he appeared, speaking in a way that implied they had met her. Perhaps Kwon Chasa had already pieced everything together.
The secret meant to be kept between just him and Yu Chasa was on the verge of being exposed.
“Yu Chasa.”
“Yes….”
Jion trembled at the tension between the two grim reapers. Yu Chasa barely managed to answer Kwon Chasa’s call, then bowed his head. He, too, had guessed that Kwon Chasa had figured everything out.
“Did you meet Nam Seunghee with the student?”
Yu Chasa slowly raised his head, and Jion bit his lip. To think their secret would be exposed so easily. Meeting Yu Chasa’s questioning gaze, Jion shook his head quickly with wide eyes, pleading innocence. Kwon Chasa’s appearance was a bolt from the blue for him as well.
Kwon Chasa sighed, then closed his eyes.
“Didn’t I say we should exclude the student because this is dangerous?”
“Ah… yes, uh, that’s right… But since you are busy I thought it would be good if I took care of it… and as I mentioned before, I also thought Jion would be able to have a conversation with Nam Seunghee….”
As Yu Chasa continued to ramble on, Kwon Chasa sighed. The atmosphere between the two was tense.
“Um… when Jion spoke to her, Nam Seunghee responded. Maybe it’s because they’re the same age… Jion even granted her wish! We crossed the hongsalmun together, but I came back because I remembered I hadn’t taken Jion home…”
Jion’s gaze was fixed on Kwon Chasa’s stern face, rather than on Yu Chasa, who was struggling to salvage the situation. He thought that Kwon Chasa’s cold expression and the menacing aura he exuded were all because he was worried about him…
His heart beast so fast it felt like it would burst at any moment.
Jion swallowed saliva through his parched throat and barely managed to stand in front of Yu Chasa. Standing between the two made the chill even more intense.
“…It’s all resolved. I’m perfectly fine.”
Jion smiled slightly and cautiously looked up at Kwon Chasa. In any case, he was glad to see Kwon Chasa, whom he hadn’t seen for several days. Although he had angered him, Jion had to use every ounce of his strength to not smile because Kwon Chasa seemed to be worried about him.
Isn’t this a really positive sign? It means he worried about and thought of me even on days we didn’t meet. At the very least, it means he is interested in me…
Jion suppressed another smile, but suddenly felt a stinging gaze and slightly raised his head.
Kwon Chasa’s gaze as he looked down at Jion was intense. Under that stare, as if he were trying to dissect every single feature of his face, Jion felt his face burn.
Not long after, Kwon Chasa ran his hand through his hair, let out a short sigh, and tilted his head to the side. He was displeased with something. While Jion just blinked, not knowing the reason, Kwon Chasa suddenly approached him.
Jion froze as the cold aura suddenly approached and his face drew close. The angle made it look like they were about to kiss.
What should I do? Should I close my eyes? Should I stick out my lips? I’d know if I’d ever kissed someone before. Wait, but why kiss all of a sudden? In foreign movies, they fight tooth and nail, but then suddenly their eyes meet and they kiss. Could it be that Kwon Chasa has a taste for that…?
“…….”
While Jion was racking his brains, Kwon Chasa clicked his tongue and pulled away.
“What do you mean you’re fine? The ghost’s stench is embedded in your body. Go home first so you can drink some spring water.”
Kwon Chasa coldly said and immediately pressed his hand against the ground to summon a gate. Then, before the gate could even be opened, he grabbed Jion’s wrist. Jion felt as if his heart was about to jump out of his mouth and could not say a word. He could only feel the pulse pounding in the wrist he was holding.
“Kwon Chasa-nim, I… will be going to the underworld….”
Yu Chasa mumbled timidly toward Kwon Chasa as he was about to cross the gate. Kwon Chasa nodded, took Jion, and immediately crossed the gate. Left all alone, Yu Chasa also soon summoned a hongsalmun and headed toward the underworld.
As if the commotion had never happened, the area in front of the school quickly became quiet.
