Chapter 75 Recovery
Another day passed, and when Chen Wanchao woke up in the early morning, he felt exceptionally refreshed. He no longer had a poor appetite and finished his bowl of porridge, and even ate a second bowl.
Thus, his second first proper heat cycle finally came to an end.
Qi Xiao personally came over to examine him and took several vials of blood back to the hospital for further testing.
That afternoon, Qi Xiao sent back the test report.
“The test results are all normal, and the gland development has reached the ideal level,” Qi Xiao said. “You’re fully recovered, Xiao Wan.”
Although they already knew that his glands would definitely heal if nothing unexpected happened, Shen Wanchao and his family still couldn’t help but feel genuinely happy after hearing the doctor say it.
Shen Wanchao suddenly realized that he would never have to endure the complications caused by the damage to his glands again.
Jiang Yin was so excited that tears welled up in her eyes, and she kept repeating, “That’s wonderful, that’s wonderful…”
She wiped away her tears, looked at Shen Wanchao, her lips moved, but in the end she said nothing, and just stepped forward to hug her son.
Shen Wanchao was stunned for a moment, then accepted her hug and patted her back reassuringly.
Finally, Zhou Hui no longer had to live apart from Shen Wanchao.
In the evening, Zhou Hui drove to pick up Shen Wanchao and take him home.
Zhou Ruolin stood at the door watching Zhou Hui carry Shen Wanchao’s schoolbag into the car. The smile on his face gradually faded. Suddenly, he asked, “Which room is Xiao Wan sleeping in over there now?”
Zhou Hui paused in his action of opening the trunk: “…”
Shen Wanchao turned around stiffly: “…”
Zhou Ruolin stood leisurely with his arms crossed, and pressed, “Speak up, did you sleep in the guest room or the master bedroom?”
“Dad…” Shen Wanchao wanted to explain.
“I’m asking Zhou Hui, don’t interrupt.” Zhou Ruolin continued to look at his child, who was not young anymore.
“We sleep together,” Zhou Hui said helplessly.
Zhou Ruolin, with an expression that said, “I knew it,” said seriously, “How can this be? It’s not like you don’t have any spare rooms. Either you use separate rooms, or Xiao Wan can stay with us.”
Shen Wanchao quickly ran to Zhou Ruolin’s side, grabbed his arm, and showed an obedient smile that elders find most irresistible. He said, “Dad, I’m not really only 18 years old. Zhou Hui and I have been married for so many years, and Xiao Chen is about to take the college entrance exam. Is it really necessary to separate? Besides, I was the one who suggested moving back to the master bedroom. If you want to blame someone, blame me.”
Zhou Ruolin looked at him helplessly, and finally smiled: “You…”
It was all because Shen Wanchao looked so young now that Zhou Ruolin couldn’t treat him like an adult. It was as if he had really gone back to twenty years ago, and he couldn’t help but treat him like a child.
“Alright, I can’t interfere in your relationship,” Zhou Ruolin gave up. “But I want to confirm one thing with you: you two don’t seem to be planning on having a second child, right?”
Shen Wanchao: “…”
Zhou Hui: “…”
Zhou Ruolin thought for a moment, then laughed and said, “It’s fine if you want it. Old Tan and I have both retired and are idle at home every day. We can help you take care of it.”
Shen Xianru happened to come out of the house and heard this. He was startled and asked, “What? Are you going to have a younger brother or sister for Chenchen?”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yin quickly ran out and shouted, “No! Let’s wait at least two years! I’ll take care of the baby in two years!”
Shen Wanchao: “…”
Just a moment ago they were treating him like a child, how come he was being pressured to have a baby in the next second?
Elders… are so scary.
Zhou Hui quickly stuffed Shen Wanchao into the car, closed the door, and walked to the driver’s seat. Before getting in, he left the three elderly people with a bombshell:
“That’s enough for today. I had a vasectomy a few years ago. See you next time!”
“Bang!”
The car door closed, and Zhou Hui started the car as quickly as possible and drove away.
Zhou Ruolin, Shen Xianru, and Jiang Yin were left standing in the courtyard, dumbfounded.
Half a minute later, Zhou Ruolin reacted, “You brat, explain yourself! When did this happen?!”
Shen Wanchao looked back for a long time before turning around. He laughed so hard he couldn’t sit straight: “Oh my god, they are going to be scared to death by you.”
Zhou Hui scoffed lightly: “Who told them to keep pressuring you to have a second child? We clearly agreed ten years ago that we would only have Xiao Chen. Do they really think we are newlyweds?”
At this point, Zhou Hui muttered, “Maybe I should really get a vasectomy?”
Shen Wanchao couldn’t suppress the smile on his lips. He placed his hand in front of him and twirled two fingers: “Actually… I feel that way a little too.”
Zhou Hui glanced at the person next to him out of the corner of his eye, and asked knowingly, “What way?”
Shen Wanchao looked at him and said: “Like newlywed.”
Zhou Hui laughed and extended his right hand. Shen Wanchao placed his left hand on top of his and shook it.
A black Maybach drove along the bustling city streets as the city lights began to twinkle, its destination home.
…
Suddenly a red light stopped them.
Zhou Hui corrected Shen Wanchao’s statement: “To be precise, it didn’t feel a newlywed period, it was more like when we were secretly together. After all, who has ever seen a newlywed couple living separately? Someone even had to secretly video call me to take off my clothes…”
“That’s enough!” Shen Wanchao reached out to cover Zhou Hui’s mouth.
As a result, Zhou Hui grabbed his hand and kissed his palm.
Shen Wanchao was startled and quickly withdrew his hand. He glared at him reproachfully, thinking to himself, “Shameless.”
Zhou Hui, true to his shamelessness, laughed, “Hahaha!”
…
Two days after Shen Wanchao’s heat cycle ended, it was time for Tao Yan to return to his hometown.
Shen Wanchao had agreed to see Tao Yan off at the station. He prepared a farewell gift a day in advance and got up very early that morning.
Zhou Hui didn’t go to work; he was going to accompany Shen Wanchao to see Tao Yan off.
“The train doesn’t leave for another hour. Let’s go sit in the cafe in front of the station and wait for a while.”
After arriving at the station, Shen Wanchao checked the time, and then he and Zhou Hui took the gifts to a coffee shop.
After sitting down, Shen Wanchao sent Tao Yan a message saying that he had arrived and was waiting for him at the coffee shop.
Since he hadn’t received a reply immediately, Shen Wanchao stopped looking at his phone and started chatting with Zhou Hui.
“By the way, there’s something I’m really concerned about. I was going to take care of it after the tutoring session, but I was in heat and it got delayed,” Shen Wanchao said.
Zhou Hui asked patiently, “What is it?”
The coffees were served: an iced Americano and a caramel latte. Shen Wanchao took a sip of his iced Americano, frowned in disapproval, and then naturally took Zhou Hui’s latte and exchanged it with his own.
Zhou Hui had anticipated this and was not surprised.
Or perhaps that latte was originally ordered for Shen Wanchao.
The sweet caramel flavor melted in his mouth, and Shen Wanchao was barely satisfied before saying, “It’s about Xiao Yi.”
Shen Wanchao briefly told Zhou Hui about his encounter with Dong Dapeng at the school gate some time ago and Dong Dapeng’s mention of Lin Anyi’s biological father.
Then, Shen Wanchao pondered for a long time and said, “I’ve thought about it for a long time, but I’m still not at reassured. We have no idea what kind of person the other party is. We can’t just sit and wait for him to come to us. We have to take the initiative to take measures.”
Zhou Hui thought for a moment, then asked, “What do you want to do?”
Shen Wanchao looked up at him: “I want to go to the orphanage to ask the old director about it, at least to find out who the other person is.”
“Whenever you set off, I’ll go with you.” Zhou Hui had no objection to this.
The two discussed the follow-up arrangements in detail, and after that, they talked about many trivial matters at home. Time passed quickly.
10 o’clock.
Shen Wanchao glanced at his phone and his expression turned serious.
Zhou Hui asked, “Has Tao Yan arrived yet?”
Shen Wanchao shook his head: “I don’t know, he didn’t reply to my message.”
After saying that, Shen Wanchao immediately made a phone call to Tao Yan.
However, the busy tone on the phone kept ringing until it automatically disconnected.
“Could he have overslept? That shouldn’t be the case.” Shen Wanchao muttered to himself as he rubbed his forehead. He dialed again.
Several phone calls went unanswered, and Shen Wanchao and Zhou Hui both felt that something was wrong.
The train would leave in less than half an hour. Tao Yan should have arrived at the station by now, so why couldn’t he get in touch with him?
There were many reasons why you might not be able to reach someone. Maybe they overslept, or something came up unexpectedly. In any case, Tao Yan was an adult; not answering the phone didn’t necessarily mean anything. Most likely, something had happened, and he would call back to apologize for not answering.
But Shen Wanchao had a bad feeling.
…
The curtains were tightly drawn, and the room was dimly lit, making it impossible to tell whether it was night or day.
Tao Yan sat on the bed with his arms resting on his knees. His head was bowed and his bangs were scattered across his forehead.
His glasses were taken away. With his 800-degree myopia, he couldn’t even walk properly without them.
Ji Yang had also confiscated his phone.
Since last night, Tao Yan had been unable to make any contact with the outside world.
“Click”.
The door opened and Ji Yang walked in carrying breakfast. Tao Yan looked over but could only see a few blurry blocks of color. The only reason he could tell that Ji Yang was carrying breakfast was because he could smell the aroma of rice porridge.
Ji Yang sat down next to Tao Yan by the bed. A crisp sound rang out a the ceramic spoon hit the rim of the bowl.
“Eat something.”
Ji Yang handed the bowl to Tao Yan, who didn’t move; he assumed that it was because his eyesight was poor.
So Ji Yang scooped up some rice porridge with a spoon, blew on it twice, and brought it to Tao Yan’s lips.
Tao Yan remained silent. He expressed his protest and dissatisfaction through non-cooperation.
Ji Yang persisted for a while before withdrawing his hand; he said defiantly, “If you don’t eat, you’ll be the one who goes hungry.”
“Give me back my glasses and phone, I need to go to the station,” Tao Yan demanded.
Ji Yang placed the bowl on the bedside tabl. He flatly refused: “Impossible.”
Tao Yan said no more. He only regretted that last night, thinking it was the last day, he let Ji Yang do it again and again, and in the end, this guy actually made him lose consciousness.
Alphas are truly a bunch of beasts with nothing but brute force.
When he woke up again, he was lying naked in bed, his phone, glasses, and other belongings all gone. To prevent himself from sneaking out, Ji Yang even threw all the shoes in the shoe cabinet into the bathroom to soak in water.
“I will absolutely not let you go.” Ji Yang gritted his teeth.
Upon hearing his refusal, Tao Yan did not react. He lowered his head without saying a word.
Even though it was his glasses that were confiscated, he seemed to have lost the function of both his ears. He became an indifferent, unmoved, and unfeeling stone statue, completely unconcerned about what Ji Yang said.
Seeing him like this made Ji Yang’s teeth ache.
He had never hated Tao Yan so much for being a Beta.
If he were an Omega, I can mark him. From then on, as long as the mark exists, no matter where he escapes, he will eventually return to my side.
Unfortunately, he was a Beta.
A Beta that couldn’t be marked or bound.
